Feature Article:  'Tis the Season - At Work and Home

We're entering that time of year -- the holiday season.  For some people, this time of year brings great joy.  For others, it is a source of angst.  For others, it's somewhere in between joy and angst.  For some, it's just like all other days of the year because they choose not to celebrate the winter holidays.

Regardless of whether or not you celebrate the winter holidays, or to what extent you celebrate them, this is a time to ask yourself:  What do you want most during this next month and a half?  Just to clarify, I'm not talking about material things that you want...I'm talking about what you want this winter season to be like for you.

For those of you who have coached with me, you know that we spend time consciously creating what we want instead of letting "life happen."  So, now is the time to clarify your desires for the next month and a half to consider who you want to be in the world -- at work as well as at home.   Let's take a look at both of these areas of your life:

WORK:  Who do you want to be at work?  Here are a few places to look:

1.  How do you want to "show up" at work this time of year?  For example, if you want to be relaxed and not stressed at work so you can really enjoy this time of year, what kind of self care needs to happen -- how much sleep do you need?   How much exercise do you need to be at your best?  What else will you do to take care of YOU so that you can truly be the person you want to be around your work colleagues, employees, customers/clients, etc.?

2.  How can you help your work colleagues create more meaning
this time of year?  Examples might include asking how your team can support each other so that everyone can take the time off they desire, or asking each person individually how you can support them this holiday season.

3.  How can you help your employees create a meaningful holiday season?
Examples might include giving them an afternoon off to spend with their families, or holding an off-site team building retreat to recognize all of their hard work this past year and ensure they start the new year off with the tools they need to be successful.

4.  What about your clients/customers - how can you help make this time of year more special for them?  Examples might include a customer appreciation day and/or offering some d-i-s-c-o-u-n-t-s like we did this week to recognize all of you, our loyal clients.

5.  What is one thing that you can do differently to make this time of year more enjoyable at work for you and those around you?  Thing about one simple action that will have the impact you want, and do it!

HOME/PERSONAL:  Who do you want to be at home?  Here are some questions to ask yourself:

1.  How do you want to "show up" at home this time of year?  For example, if you want to be relaxed so you can really enjoy this time of year, what kind of self care needs to happen -- how much sleep do you need?   How much exercise do you need to be at your best?  What else WILL you do to take care of YOU so that you can truly be the person you want to be around the people who are most important in your life?

2.  How can you help your friends and family create more meaning
this time of year?  Examples might include giving them a few hours off to do some holiday shopping while you watch their kids, or taking someone to lunch and really listening to what's most important to them.

3.  How can you help make a difference in the world this year?  Many people  are less fortunate than us and are in need of the basics -- food, clothing and shelter.  What is one thing you can do to help one person have a hot meal or shelter this time of year?

4.  How can you really THRIVE (not just survive) this holiday season?  What do you want to say "yes" to?  What do you want to say "no" to in order to make this holiday season truly meaningful for you?  Will you do that?  It might be hard at first, but it is possible...I'll share with you a personal example.  I said "no" last week to an extended family gathering in order to say "yes" to time with my partner, because my partner and I had not spent much time together recently due to my travel schedule and spending time at home last week was my number one priority.  If I can do it, you can do it -- get clear on what your top priorities are, and then start saying "yes" to YOU!

In closing, I invite you to create the environment that you want most over this next month and a half.  If you're not sure where to start, or if you'd like some assistance, there is a great resource that walks you through the process, step-by-step, on this topic -- "Survive & THRIVE the Holidays" CD at www.goalsinsight.com/products/index.html .

Will you let me know what you will do to enjoy this time of year?  Please send your feedback to coachcheryl@goalsinsight.com -- we love to hear from you!
