Feature Article:  How Well Are You and Your Team Progressing on Your Goals?

This is a fabulous time of year - everyone is back from summer vacations and ready to move full speed ahead for the next few months to wrap up the year!

Since this month marks the end of the third quarter for most organizations, many individuals and teams within those organizations are evaluating their progress on their goals.  Regardless of your status (e.g. whether you work within an organization, or you lead the organization, or you're part of a team or your full-time job is to be at home), NOW is an opportune time to evaluate the progress of the goals and intentions you set for this year.

If you and/or your team are at least three quarters of the way toward achieving the goals you set for this year, congratulations!  Be sure to do something to celebrate this major accomplishment, and also look for ways that you can support each other to stay on track for the remainder of the year.

If you and/or your team are not at least three quarters of the way toward achieving the goals you set for this year, let's take a look at what needs to happen next.  Here are a few questions to explore:

  1. How well do these goals still align with your team/organization's mission, vision and values?  If your goals support the overall mission, vision and values of your organization, your team has a greater likelihood of achieving your goals due to that alignment.  If not, this is a good time to re-evaluate whether the goals you're working on are really the "right" goals for you and your team, in order to ensure that your organization gets the most benefit from your work on those goals.  If your team has not yet created it's own mission, vision and values, now would be a good time to do so (especially as you start to plan for next year), as this will inspire everyone on the team to be moving together in the same direction toward success.

  2. Has your team been committed to these goals?  Have you been committed to these goals?  If the goals are inspiring you and your team toward success, great!  If not, there is likely a low level of commitment to the goals and that level of commitment will need to increase in order for the goals to be achieved.  On a scale of 1-10, how committed is your team to these goals?  This is a great question to ask during a team meeting.  To increase the level of commitment to your team's goals, it is critical to talk about this as a team to see what the team needs in order to be more committed to achieving these results.  Also, be sure to ask each other:  what's missing from our commitment to our goals?  And, what's missing from our level of commitment to each other?

  3. What obstacles are preventing you and your team from making the progress you want on these goals?  Be very honest here - it is important to have some candid conversations with your team about the specific things that are getting in the way of your team achieving your desired results.  Be sure to ask for input from everyone and create a safe environment for each team member to say what's on their mind without fear of being labeled or judged.  Teams exist to produce results - and if there are obstacles that are preventing the team from achieving results, those obstacles must be addressed before the team can be successful.

Also, be on the lookout for obstacles that are related to your team's dynamics - for example, the three most important relationship factors on a team are trust, respect and camaraderie.  If your team does not exhibit trust, respect and camaraderie on a consistent basis, these relationship dynamics will negatively impact your team's ability to be successful over the long term.  So, again, take the time to have these very important conversations with your team so that you can all determine how to handle these obstacles that are preventing your team from maximizing your success.

  4. What needs to happen between now and the end of the year for you and your team to achieve your desired goals?  This is where the "rubber meets the road" so to speak - this is the time for your team to speak freely and honestly with each other to identify exactly what needs to happen for your team to be successful between now and the end of this year.  Ask your team questions such as:  What do we need to be successful?  What are we willing to say "yes" to in order to meet our goals?  What do we need to say "no" to in order to meet our goals?  Some teams like to use the start/stop/continue process by asking:  What do we need to start doing?  Stop doing?  Continue doing? in order to achieve the results we desire.

  5. Are you celebrating your accomplishments along the way?  Remember that success breeds success - momentum is VERY powerful!  So, be sure to help your team celebrate the successful milestones toward goal achievement along the way, in order to maintain your team's momentum and excitement.  Many teams take their goal setting processes very seriously, so remember to have some fun along the way, too!
By checking in now on your own work and personal goals progress, you will be positioned for greater success between now and the end of the year.  If you need help with this process, we want to let you know that we've reduced the price so that more of you can take advantage of a very useful resource to be more successful with your goals!

By taking the time to work with your team to evaluate your team's progress now, your team is much more likely to create the results you want between now and the end of the year.  If your team has lost its momentum, you can help them get it back through implementing some of the suggestions above - give it a try!
