A Few Notes From Cheryl

Welcome to our newest members of this community!  Many of you recently joined us, from all of the workshops that I have been leading these past two months.  And, congratulations to Michele Cappel, who just became the 1,000th member of our global community - as promised in our last newsletter, she will receive a complimentary copy of "Powerful Goal Setting:  6 Steps to Meaningful Business & Personal Achievement"!  Thank you all for your continued referrals of your business colleagues, team members, friends and family to receive this newsletter and continue our global reach of helping organizations and individuals within them  throughout the world.

This Month's Feature Article:  I hope you enjoy this month's article on the topic of well being and safety for your team.  This article was inspired by my recent participation in the Rebuilding Together program, where 10,000 homes across the U.S. are worked on during one day by volunteers who want to make a difference in their communities for low income seniors and disabled residents.  Our team was in Oakland, CA and two members of Goals InSight (Sharon Close and yours truly) helped rebuild portions of an elderly woman's home.  See us in action at http://www.goalsinsight.com/about_us.html (toward bottom of page).

Sacramento readers:  For those of you near Sacramento, CA, be sure to check out the upcoming July 18 workshop below - I'd love to see you there :)

As always, we welcome your ideas for future topics, so please feel free to drop me a note at cheryl@goalsinsight.com .

Warmest regards,

    Cheryl

Feature Article:  Who is Looking Out for Your Team?

Who is monitoring YOUR team for well being and safety?

During the Rebuilding Together-Oakland community service day, I was assigned Safety Monitor for our team of 60 volunteers - it was my job to ensure the safety and well being of every one of those volunteers, who ranged in age anywhere from 13 to 65.  It was my job to ensure that painters on ladders were using them correctly, and it was also my job to help figure out a way to keep the bees that were buzzing around from stinging all of the volunteers!  Because it was a hot day, it was also my job to ensure that volunteers were staying hydrated.

So, I brought our team members bottled water before they even realized they needed it.  I also sent them out on breaks for fresh air even before they needed it, so that they wouldn't be affected by the paint smells in the house.  When subsets of our team looked refreshed from their breaks, I’d send them back in to continue working and then send out another team for their break.  Basically, it was my job to look out for the needs of every individual on our team, as well as the good of the entire team, by proactively looking for ways to help enhance their well being and overall safety.

As I worked in this role, I realized that this team of 60 volunteers was no different than all of the organizational teams that I work with as their coach/facilitator – every team needs to have at least one Safety Monitor!  Every team needs at least one (ideally, more) person looking out for the well being and safety of their teams.

So, some questions to ponder are:

Who plays the Safety Monitor role for YOUR team, either formally or informally? Who are the people on your team that look out for each other and proactively check in to see how the other team members are doing?

If no one is currently acting as Safety Monitor or looking out for others on the team, what could be done to ensure that starts happening? What exactly is needed, and by whom? How could you start leading by example in this role?

If someone or several team members are already looking out for others, what could be done to enhance or improve this role? And, how could this "looking out for each other" attitude become contagious for the rest of the team?

In many of the teams we work with at Goals InSight, team members do check in with each other because the teams have developed a higher level of cohesiveness due to the team development work they've done with us.  So, if you're a member of one of those teams, congratulations!  Be sure to find a way to celebrate your success in this area.

If your team is not one of those teams that is working cohesively and genuinely concerned about the well being of its team members, ask yourself what's missing and whether it is possible for your team to start doing that on it's own, or whether assistance is needed.

Of course, we are here to help you if your team needs assistance in working more cohesively and looking out for each other more to improve the team's overall dynamics and results.  We are here to support you, so if we can help in any way, feel free to contact us at (510) 482-8979 or info@goalsinsight.com .

Team Building Events and Off-Site Meetings:
Could your team use some help to be more cohesive?
Is it time to enhance your team's relationships and productivity?

Now is the time to plan for Q4 meetings - our 2007 calendar is fillinq up!

Some teams know that something isn't working, but they don't know exactly what that is or how to improve it.  Some organizations hold team building seminars and employee retreats to enhance their teams productivity and relationships.  Do either of those statements describe you/your team?  If so, and if you haven't already contacted us to discuss your needs, be sure to do so soon to see if we can help you while space is available (our calendar often fills up 1-3 months in advance).

We offer a variety of programs to enhance the performance of your teams as well as improve the ways in which your teams interact, so we invite you to visit  http://www.goalsinsight.com/programs/team_training.html . This is a great way to show appreciation for your team and enhance their productivity, thereby improving the bottom line for your organization!
