Feature Article: Have You Lost Your
Mind(fulness)?
I spent the past 8 days on a fabulous retreat...not a typical retreat,
but a SILENT retreat. You may be asking "what is a silent
retreat?" Exactly what it sounds like -- very, very quiet!
No talking with other people, no telephones, no e-mail, etc. Just
me, myself and my own mindfulness (plus 90 other retreat participants,
5 teachers and the retreat center staff).
Intrigued? The main purpose of a silent, mindfulness retreat is
to slow down and disengage from all of our usual busy activities,
distractions and influx of information that we face every day.
The results of slowing down in this way include letting go of the
"busyness" in our mind and daily activities so that we can focus on one
activity/task at a time, in order to be truly present in each
moment. What is the benefit of being present in each
moment? We have a clear mind, an open heart and can see the truth
in each moment, not the "story" we make up about what is
happening. And, we can be more relaxed and enjoy our life and
work so much more!
In both my personal and business life, I have experienced the benefits
of being mindful as well as the results of not being mindful. For
those of you who knew me years ago in the corporate world, you knew me
to be extremely organized, always planning the next steps and a great
multi-tasker (if there was an award for multi-tasking, I would have
received it back then!). Of course my employers found these to be
great characteristics, yet I realized that I was not fully present in
most moments because I was driven to get as many things done as quickly
as possible. At times, I felt my head spinning with all of the
multiple to-do lists and activities -- when, in fact, I wasn't losing
my mind, but instead was losing my MINDFULNESS.
For those of you who can relate, the good news is that it is possible
to be a recovering multi-tasker and still be extremely productive and
effective! Over the past few years, I've experienced the benefits
of slowing down and being present to one task at a time, and it has
made a huge difference in my life and in the lives of those around
me. When I am mindful at work, I am fully present and focused on
one client in that moment. When I am mindful at home, I am fully
present and engaged in a conversation with a loved one.
During the mindfulness retreat, all I had to do was be mindful -- pay
attention to what I was doing in the moment. When I was walking,
I walked. When I was eating, I ate. When I exercised, I
exercised. That's it! And, I had all the time in the world
to truly enjoy each moment of each activity without my mind racing to
the next activity.
Questions for
you to consider:
- On a scale of 1 to 10, with 10 being the most
mindful, how mindful are you typically on a daily basis?
(note: if you are already at a 10, congratulations and I hope
you'll do something to celebrate!!)
- Where in your life or work are you the least
mindful?
- What difference would it make if you were more
mindful?
My challenge to you: Choose 1 thing that you will practice each
day, starting TODAY, to start being more mindful. At the end of
each day, notice what difference it made for you to be more
mindful. Will you do that?
To ensure your success, consider asking someone to help hold you
accountable to this challenge. Forward this e-mail to a friend or
colleague today and ask that person to hold you accountable! If
you want a coach to hold you accountable to this
challenge, you know where to find me <smile>!
